HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Eight Pine Belt area soccer teams entered the weekend still alive in the high school playoffs. However, only three remained standing by Saturday night.
Sacred Heart girls soccer took one step closer to its second straight state championship with a 3-0 win over Clarkdale on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Crusaders host St. Patrick on Tuesday in the 1A/2A/3A South State title.
The Sacred Heart boys followed with a 1-0 win over Franklin County on Saturday evening. The Crusaders visit St. Patrick on Tuesday in the South State title.
The Lady Mustangs captured a 3-1 win at West Harrison to advance to the South State finals. West Jones visits Long Beach on Tuesday night.
Oak Grove was on the verge of avenging its loss to Gulfport in the 2018 South State finals, as the Warriors led the Admirals 3-1 at halftime on Saturday.
However, Gulfport scored two goals in the final ten minutes, including the equalizer with 30 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. The Admirals eventually escaped with a 4-3 victory.
Oak Grove’s season ends at 16-5-2. The Lady Warriors fell to Gulfport 4-2 on Saturday, ending their season at 13-5-1.
The Laurel boys fell to West Harrison 4-0 on the road. The Golden Tornadoes finish the season 6-9-2.
On Friday, the South Jones girls fell to Long Beach 1-0. The Lady Braves finish the season 14-6-3.
The West Jones boys fell to Long Beach 2-1 on Friday, ending their season at 13-7-1.
