HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of special Olympians gathered at Southern Miss Saturday morning for a competition to qualify for state games coming up next month.
The Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics at the Payne Center brought out about 60 athletes from Forrest, Lamar, Perry, Walthall, and Marion counties.
The tournament featured both individual skills and team competitions.
“It is a regional competition, so if you’ve come to practice and you’ve met the qualifying score, then you're able to go to state,” Special Olympics Regional Director Amber Dossett said.
“It’s a good time, it’s enjoys yourself, and win a lot of ribbons and have fun, it’s a blast,” Special Olympian Marlana Collins said.
The state games will take place at Ole Miss on March 2.
