No. 18 William Carey wins fifth straight

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ Junior forward Branden Sheppard scored 18 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to pace William Carey University to an 86-70 Southern States Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory Saturday at Clinton Gymnasium.

The 18th-ranked Crusaders (16-5, 12-1 SSAC) posted their fifth consecutive victory as Sheppard posted a double after grabbing 14 rebounds.

Sheppard had help.

Junior wing Cameron Douglas added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior guard Adrian Williams had 12 points, five rebounds and three steals and junior wing Brandon Cranford scored 11 points.

The Falcons (11-10, 5-8), who led 40-39 at halftime, could not keep pace in the second as the Crusaders held them 18 points less than their scoring average on the season.

Senior guard Jacob Roark led Florida with 13 points and five assists. Junior wing Stefan Nakic-Vojnovic scored 12 points, freshman guard Ethan Smith had 10 points and six assists and junior wing Kent Hegarty finished with nine points and six rebounds.

The Crusaders will visit the University of Mobile at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Mobile, Ala.
