Lady Bobcats tabbed tops in NJCAA preseason poll

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) _ The Jones College women’s softball team start off the 2019 season where they ended up in 2018: tops in the nation.

The Lady Bobcats, the National Junior College Athletic Association’s defending national softball champions, were ranked number one in the NJCAA’s Division II preseason poll released last week.

The Lady Bobcats went 54-3 last season, earning the national crown with a five-game sweep through he NJCAA D-II World Series. Jones outscored its opponents 69-12 and belted 15 home runs during the tournament in Clinton.

Jones defeated Phoenix College 18-2 in the championship game at Traceway Park.

Phoenix is rated No. 2 in the preseason poll, followed by Louisiana State University-Eunice; Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College; and Cowley (Kan.) College.

The Lady Bobcats, coached by Chris Robinson, open the 2019 season on Feb. 15-16 with four games in the Sun Chief Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala. Jones opens its home schedule against Coastal Alabama Community College/South at 2 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
