LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Friday marked the 50th anniversary of a deadly train explosion in Laurel that killed two people and injured nearly three dozen.
It happened around 4:15 a.m. on Jan. 25, 1969, near the Kingston Street intersection.
Fifteen cars from a Southern Railway train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded.
Property damage was extensive, with 54 homes destroyed and another 1,300 homes damage.
Total damage to the railroad was about $3 million.
