BOWLING GREEN, KY (WDAM) _ University of Southern Mississippi junior forward Respect Leaphart turned in career double to go with freshman center Kelsey Jones’ third double-double of the season as the Lady Eagles stunned Western Kentucky University 69-56 Thursday night at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Lady Eagles (10-10, 2-5 Conference USA) used a 17-0 run to break away from a 5-5 tie in the first quarter and never trailed again in handing the Lady Hilltoppers (11-9, 5-1) their first conference loss of the season.
The 69 points were the most in conference play this season by the Lady Eagles, who knocked down 16-of-19 free throws and handed out 16 assists on 23 baskets. WKU shot just 32.1 percent from the floor, including 2-of-19 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Leaphart had the first, 2-point game of her career, piling up 24 points to go with a career-best 11 rebounds. Jones had 14 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
Senior guard Meagan Brown added 10 points and four rebounds for the Lady Eagles, while junior point guard Shonte Hailes handed out seven assists.
WKU got 20 points, nine rebounds and four steals from sophomore forward Raneem Elgedawy and 13 points, four rebounds and three steals from junior forward Dee Givens.
USM will head to Marshall University for a noon tipoff Saturday.
