USM basketball grabs a pair of C-USA wins

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - “We’re just going to try to get the game down to four minutes and just go from there,” said USM senior guard Tyree Griffin on Tuesday.

Griffin spoke his words into existence on Thursday when he led the Golden Eagles down to one second before knocking down a game-winning three-pointer over Charlotte.

Griffin’s step-back jumper lifted Southern Miss past the 49ers 63-60 for the Eagles’ third straight win.

It also marks the first time under coach Doc Sadler that USM has won three straight Conference USA games. Southern Miss (11-7, 3-3 C-USA) visits Old Dominion on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Lady Eagles claimed their first C-USA victory of the season with a 65-54 win over Charlotte inside Reed-Green Coliseum.

Junior Shonte Hailes led USM with 23 points. Southern Miss (9-9, 1-4 C-USA) hosts Old Dominion on Saturday at 4 p.m.
