HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) – University of Southern Miss center Trace Clopton was named to the Football Writers Association of America 18th annual Freshman All-America Team.
Clopton, who enrolled at USM in January 18 after graduating early from Brookhaven High School, was one of just nine true freshmen to start on the offensive line in his team’s season opener and just one of two to start at center.
Clopton played in 10 of USM’s 11 games, helping the Golden Eagles to a 6-5 record. A midseason injury sidelined Clopton for one game and out of the starting lineup for three games.
Clopton, who earned Conference USA All-Freshman honors, became the fifth Golden Eagle named to FWAA Freshman All-America since the team’s debut in 2001.
He joins former USM honorees running back Damion Fletcher and linebacker Gerald McRath (2006), receiver DeAndre Brown (2008) and linebacker Racheem Boothe (2017).
