Bobcats hold off Hinds CC, 86-78

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) _ Sophomore forward Galen Alexander scored 23 points and sophomore forward Tirus Smith of Petal added 16 points Thursday night as Jones College defeated Hinds Community College at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Winceton Edwards (Oak Grove) scored 15 points on five 3-pointers as the Bobcats (8-3) remained unbeaten in South Division after two games.

Smith’s basket with 1 second left in the first half gave the Bobcats a 44-43 halftime edge, and an Edwards’ 3-pointer gave Jones a 58-52 lead with 14:52 to play in the second half.

But the Bulldogs (7-4, 0-2 South) came back, tying the game on a trey by freshman guard Peyton Taylor about three minutes later.

Alexander’s basket at the 9:52 mark broke the tie and gave the Bobcats the lead for good.

An Edwards’ 3-pointer put the Bobcats ahead 78-68 with 3:32 to play, their largest lead of the game.

Taylor led Hinds with 22 points for Hinds and sophomore forward Stephane Ayangma added 20.

The Bobcats will visit archrival Pearl River Community College at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Marvin R. White Coliseum.
