KANSAS CITY, MO (WDAM) _ William Carey University women’s soccer coach Danny Owens was named Select Sport America-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ National Coach of the Year for 2018.
Owens guided the Lady Crusaders (21-3) to their first national title with a 1-0 victory over Keiser University on Dec. 2, 2018, in the finale of the 2018 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship in Orange Beach, Ala.
Carey, which put together an 11-game winning streak, had four players earn NAIA All-America status, including seniors April Stewart, Abby Baravik and Shantell Thompson and sophomore Ana Paula Santos.
Santos was named the championship’s Most Valuable Player, while Stewart was named the championship’s Outstanding Defensive Player. Both were first-team All-Americans.
Carey downed Missouri Baptist 6-2 in the opening round of the national championship before posting consecutive shutouts over Eastern Oregon University and Lindsey Wilson College. In the semifinals, the Lady Crusaders outscored high-powered Southeastern University 4-2 before taking the tense 1-0 win in the finale.
The 2018 Select Sport America-NAIA National Coach of the Year was voted on by the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches Association and announced at the national convention in Chicago.
To be eligible, a head coach must be selected as their league/unaffiliated group coach of the year or taken a team to the NAIA women’s soccer national championship postseason.
