JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - January is National Blood Donor Month, and one of the nation’s top blood services providers is trying their best to get as many donations as possible.
Nearly 5,000 donations are needed each day to meet the needs of those throughout the country.
The month of January is said to be one of the most difficult times of the year to collect enough blood to meet the needs of the communities. The weather around January usually causes several blood drives to be cancelled.
Erika Bush is a representative of Vitalant, the second largest community blood service provider in the nation. Bush is encouraging all who can to give to the worthy cause.
“It’s so important to donate blood, 12,000 patients a day nationwide need blood,” Bush said.
The blood you donate will be used to treat someone in your area who really needs it.
"Hospitals here in Jones County and the surrounding areas, so we do keep the blood local within the hospitals here,” she said.
Bush said the organization has a high goal this year and your donation could help them meet or exceed it.
“We’ve had a wonderful turnout so far," Bush said. “We’re looking to collect 50 or more total today. That would definitely help our supply because we are an urgent need for all blood types.”
Donating this time around doesn’t come without an incentive.
“All donors that donate today will get enough online points for a $25 Amazon gift card, so that’s a great incentive for coming to donate with us today," Bush said. “Throughout the whole month anyone who donates will get a $25 amazon gift card.”
